Help! How can you coax a sick, weak racoon out of your backyard(I don't want to get too close to it) ??

You don't!!!! If it is sick, it needs to be removed completely from the environment, not just from your back yard.

Normally, my answer is to leave wild animals alone; however, sick and weak could indicate a disease such as rabies or canine distemper that could be contagious to humans, pets, or other wildlife. Therefore, contact animal control, your state DNR, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, or - if you would like to give the raccoon a good chance at receiving medical treatment and recouperating to be released into the wild again, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a>

Licensed wildlife rehabilitators have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and they have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to approach a sick animal yourself. And, as I said, if you were to lure him off of your property, you are just handing the problem to someone else.

Also, do not poison him - it is illegal, because other animals could get into the poison; and do not shoot him - also illegal unless it is raccoon season, and you are a licensed hunter taking the raccoon in the approved manner in the proper location (not in your backyard).Help! If you live in a city I would suggest you call your local animal control office. Distemper (rabies) has been a problem in some areas this year so your correct in not getting close to the animal.Help! How can you coax a sick, weak racoon out of your backyard(I don't want to get too close to it) ??
Call your local animal control and they will come and get it. Racoons (amongst other animals) can carry the Rabies virus.
Call animal control, they wont hurt it unless its got rabies or somthing. Theyll just trap it and release it in a better place.
