In theory we believe that the average wild coon lives somewhere between 4-12 years...but again, there is a lot of death in the first couple of years, and then it levels off until much later in life. There is a captive raccoon who I believe lived to be 17, but most captive raccoons are only good for a couple of years due to inappropriate care and feeding.
I am a rehabber who specializes in raccoons. What is the average life-span for a racoon both in the wild and captivity?
in the wild it all depends on nature(cars, predators, ect...) and in captivity if they have a friend and a big space to roam maybe 7 years. What is the average life-span for a racoon both in the wild and captivity?
Good Luck to the Raccoon. The animal is lucky to be able to survive in the wild now by 50 -65% for the 1st year of life. The trapping of coon and distemper wipe out a lot of them along with being hit by cars. Urban spraw %26amp; rabies has played a big part among raccoon. Dogs spread a lot of disease to the raccoon . Young raccoons have less survival rate . If a raccoon is kept as a pet it can live several years with good care however they carry a virus themselves that can be passed from them to humans and dogs. This virus attacks the nerves and muscles and paralyzes the victim. You can get through the sickness if treated but it can come back at anytime.I have seen this in dogs that have survived only to be down off and on through their lifetime. Sorry I got off the course there. I learned this working beside a vet.
a lot longer in the wild... they tend to be stronger!
I thought you guys used gerbils.
