In Indonesia there is a coffee-berry-eating animal not unlike a raccoon, called Luwak (pronounced loo-wak). In its droppings the undigested coffee beans are found. These beans are of the best quality because the animal only eats the best berries. Furthermore in its stomach and intestines the beans are fermented somewhat, which gives them their optimal taste.


Maybe this seems yucky to you, but some people pay exorbitant prices for this type of coffee.

There is a coffee that comes from a Civet, a cat like animal.. They eat the beans and crap them back out. Supposedly it is the best coffee ever.. (This is just what I heard.. I hate all coffee equally) It is VERY expensive and makes Starbucks look like Wal-Mart brand coffee.

All my life I heard it cone from coffee beans (which are grown), the coffee goes through different processes before being packaged to a varity of companies which are made for different types such as instant, ect.

For a non-coffee drinker, as far as I know coffee is made from coffee beans. Most come from South America, although I think some comes from India. Have you gone to the search engine Google and looked up coffee or coffee beans?

You are thinking of the Civit. Normally coffee planters do not have issues with any animals, as none of them touch the coffee beans, except the common palm civet. The civet loves coffee berries and when it eats them, the civet only digests the fruit and the actually coffee bean, comes out in its droppings.


People believe that these civets know how ripe these berries are and they always pick the berries which are just right. So it's safe to assume that the coffee beans in those berries will be the best too. It is also believed that enzymes in the stomach of the civet add to the coffee's flavor by breaking down the proteins that give coffee its bitter taste. In many south asian countries, these civet droppings are collected, processed and are sold in International market. Since these dropping are rare to find, in the whole world, only 500 KGs of this coffee is produced every year, making it the ';rarest'; and the ';costliest'; coffee in the world. The processed coffee costs about $800/KG and unprocessed beans cost about $350/KG. In India, this coffee is produced only in BR Hills by a person named Ganesh, who leaves his coffee plantations for the Civets.

There are some real expensive coffee beans that have been pooped out by giant pig like creatures of south america but not most isn't. Its bean from the tree.
