Are you allowed to keep a racoon or a ferret or a donkey or monkey as a pet?

i want to know as a pet when i get the moneyAre you allowed to keep a racoon or a ferret or a donkey or monkey as a pet?
Ferrets - yes, but they are illegal in two states and several cities across the US and some places require permits to keep them. I know they're illegal in California, Hawaii, Washington DC, New York City, and Dallas. Some more info on ferret legalities: http://www.cypresskeep.com/Ferretfiles/L鈥?/a>

Raccoons - yes, but as with ferrets, they are not legal everywhere and some cities/states require permits to keep them as pets. They're illegal in Colorado, California, Delaware, Alaska, Georgie, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, Montana, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin - http://www.mnsi.net/~remocoon/regulats.h鈥?/a>

Donkeys - they are legal in areas zoned for livestock.

Monkeys - yes, but again, they are not legal everywhere. Check with your state fish and wildlife department, county animal control or humane society, town or city planning commission, or other local government agencies to find out if they are legal. Even if they are legal where you live, I really don't recommend a monkey for a pet. There's A LOT involved in caring for a pet monkey and most people can't meet their needs. Check this site for more info on monkeys as pets - http://www.honoluluzoo.org/pets.htmAre you allowed to keep a racoon or a ferret or a donkey or monkey as a pet?
Donkey and Ferret are a yes! The monkey is a no cause its considered a exotic pet and the raccoon I would say yes!
yes i dnt know about the raccoon thought. - Farmboy's Daughter
As long as you are torn between four extremely different animals, you are not clear on what you want in a pet and are not ready to own any. That said, native wild animals (raccoons) are illegal to keep as pets, imported wild animals (monkeys) are often illegal and always unethical to keep as pets, exotic pets (ferrets) and livestock (donkeys) are legal to keep only under certain circumstances.

My response to ';I want a pet monkey'; posts...

Monkeys do not make good pets. There is simply no way to care for them thoroughly or safely in one's home. One of their most basic needs is inclusion in a proper social group of their own species, so the fact that you want ';a'; monkey is a red flag. (If you're now thinking of having several monkeys, forget it, they'll put you in the hospital in no time.)

Aside from the harm this would do to the monkey and to yourself, think of what it takes to bring one monkey to the USA for the exotic pet trade. The answer is the deaths of countless other monkeys. Primate social groups are so tightly knit that they will defend the babies to their deaths, so those who collect baby monkeys to be sold as pets must first kill all adult members of the troop. Even after that is done, only a small fraction of the babies captured survive the transport. By purchasing a pet monkey, you would be supporting this business and ensuring its continuation.

I am a professional primate keeper at a zoo. (Don't get me started about all the private monkey owners who try to dump their animals on us...) One of our gibbons was a victim of this practice. She was kidnapped from the wild as an infant, and her fingers cut off to separate her from her dead mother, to whom she'd been clinging. She then lived as a pet for the first three years of her life, after which her owner had to get rid of her because she had grown too strong, intelligent, and wild to keep. She's lived at my zoo ever since. Having been raised by a human, she was never able to learn how to survive among others of her species, so she must be housed alone. My co-workers and I go to great lengths to provide her with the highest quality of life possible. It is a heartbreaking situation, and it exists because of people who purchase primates as pets.

Also worth noting is that, of the hundreds of employees at my zoo, there are only two groups whose job is deemed dangerous enough that they must carry pepper spray on their persons. One is the large carnivore keepers. The other is the primate keepers, and that includes *all* primates, from tamarins and lemurs to great apes.
Raccoons are considered wildlife and you may need a license from the state department of natural resources to own one (or you'd be fined if they catch you with one and confiscate the animal).

A donkey is 'livestock' and most all towns and cities have ordinances against livestock within city limits, so you'd have to be out in the country.

The monkey would need to be one who's species isn't on the endangered list. They're difficult to keep healthy, are very time intensive, and expensive to maintain. You'd need to find a vet trained in exotics to make sure you can get good vet care for it. They're also very messy.

Ferrets are domesticated, but make sure you don't live in a state or community which has the species banned. You need a vet experienced with ferrets (they are prone to two very expensive diseases, the Adrenal disease requires an operation that costs about $1,200). You need to educate yourself on everything about ferrets so you can keep it properly.
You are not legally allowed to keep any wild animal as a pet.

Monkeys are not good pets, and are illegal in many states.

Ferrets are illegal in some states, such as California and Hawaii.

Donkeys make good pets, but you need to live in an area that is zoned for livestock.

Check with your state DNR to find out if monkeys or ferrets are legal in your state. Check with your local zoning board about the donkey. Leave the wild raccoons stay in the wild.
Donkey and ferret yes, generally. Would need the space for the donkey and make sure you're not in California or NYC for the ferret. Monkeys and Raccoons generally no, not without a special permit.
Raccoon- Illegal

Ferret- Depends on your area, might be legal or might not be

Monkey- Illegal

Donkey- Legal on farms, not legal inside city or suburb
Racoon-you can but get them when they are very young, but they can get very mean, my best friend use to have 1 and it turned out to be very evil :(

Ferret- depends on state. i have 2 and they are great pets you can even potty train them :)

donkey- not in city limits

monkey-my brother has one and we live in texas its only against the law on certian kinds he is a cop i just called him...

Ferret would be the best pet to have because they are fun to play with and they are very entertaining, and they are also good with kids, i have a 2 year old son and when he was a baby the ferrets would sleep in his crib with him and now they sleep in his bed with him.

:D
These will all depend on the state and city you live in. Some states ban racoons, ferrets, or monkeys. Some cities ban donkeys because they are considered livestock. However, in some places you can have all the above. Monkeys do not make good pets. We simply cannot give them the space and care they need to be happy. A pet monkey is always miserable regardless of what selfish owners of them will claim. Racoons are fascinating animals, but they are very curious and will get into everything. They can be extremely destructive. Call a local pet store or your extension agency for information as to what animals are banned for your area. You can also check with the local SPCA.
