wesker works for umbrella and was working on the 'Tyrant' in the mansion, but the stars members found the mansion and investigate dit, wesker had defences on the mansion, when they got near the end of the investigation and found out wesker was working for umbrella, wesker blew up the mansion and the stars members were presumed dead, but they all escaped and wesker went back to umbrella andd continued his work, the stars members of the mansion incident went there seperate ways, jill had to fight to get out racoon city (RE3) chris went to find his sister when she got arrested for breaking into umbrella to find him. barry escaped and went his own way but stay in contact with jill and hep her escape racoon city (end of RE3) rebecca chambers went her own way and we never heard of her again.

Resident Evil 2 Explained it all. I am not sure though. I am pretty sure the mansion exploded and then the S.T.A.R.S members were 'suspected' dead.
